Scottish Disability Sport - Boccia training camp

Why did you choose the national centre?

We chose the centre due to its facilities and fully accessible accommodation, which was designed with para sport in mind. The six specific rooms with full tracking hoists is hugely beneficial, which eradicates the added stress for some of our players and their families. To have accommodation, catering, meeting rooms and sports facilities on-site, under one roof, is so convenient for our players and saves the usual challenges of travel and transfer between venues. Importantly, the venue has marked boccia courts and the staff are more than happy to tape down more if (and when) required.

We have used the centre on several occasions and see no reason to hold residential camps at any other venue within Scotland.

Our new players and their families were so impressed with the accommodation, and the staff, that we could tell it was huge weight of their shoulders, which usually occurs when travelling away from home. Gary Fraser, Performance Manager, SDS

Tell us about your overall experience

Our experience was excellent. Booking was straightforward and we could contact the centre at any time to discuss additional requirements or changes, which we inevitably had to do. Everything was set up for us upon arrival and we were allocated a member of staff to ensure we were all set for the weekend, which really helps. All staff were attentive to all members of our team and our players are at ease from start to finish. Nothing was too much trouble and we were able to make subtle changes to our booking through out our stay. For example, players eating slightly earlier, storage of equipment, additional meeting rooms etc.

Our new players and their families were so impressed with the accommodation, and the staff, that we could tell it was huge weight of their shoulders, which usually occurs when travelling away from home.

What was your event highlight?

The highlight for us was getting a newly selected squad of performance boccia players and coaches together for a whole weekend. It was a great learning experience for the whole group, on and off the court, which will help us prepare for the season ahead.

We also trialled ‘glow in the dark’ boccia for the first time, which we believe was a world first! It went down a storm with our group as well as the NSTC staff! It may even be rolled out further as a development programme……watch this space!
