South Ayrshire Active Schools Leadership Academy

Amiee Alexander, Active Schools Coordinator (DYW) South Ayrshire Council shares their group's experience of the centre following a Leadership Academy residential.

About the group

The South Ayrshire Active Schools Leadership Academy is an exciting programme which provides young people with the opportunity to become young leaders in sport and physical activity. The programme incorporates coach education, employability skills, marketing and event planning by providing young people with training, mentoring and qualifications.

About the visit

The purpose of our visit to Inverclyde was to bring the S4-6 leaders together to gain some of the qualifications we offer as part of the Leadership Academy. The Young Leaders take part in courses from Scottish Volleyball, Scottish Handball, sportscotland, as well as our own local training.

Inverclyde facilities

We chose to come to Inverclyde for the facilities. There are great sporting facilities which allows us to run multiple courses at the one time, the overnight facilities are suited to our group of older teenagers.

During our most recent visit to Inverclyde we used the meeting rooms, sports hall, gymnastics hall, fitness studio, viewing gallery and dining room. In previous years we have also used the 3G pitch.

Highlights

A highlight of a visit to Inverclyde is the meals which are always well received by staff and pupils. Also, being able to walk the group down to the beach in the evening and use the games hall at night for activities. The chilled atmosphere around the centre and helpful staff who are always very helpful. Nothing is ever too much trouble when we are there.
