Supported investment into weightlifting in Scotland

A new and innovative approach to directly investing in residential sports training activity has been trialled with selected partners for use at sportscotland national centre Inverclyde.

One of the first SGB’s to partner in this approach was British Weightlifting, with investment into their programme for Scottish athletes. The investments primary aim is to strengthen targeted athlete and coach development, concentrating on preparing for the next CWG cycle. This initiative is geared towards enabling Scottish athletes to meet and exceed the comprehensive standards set by British Weightlifting’s pathway guidelines, ensuring their attainment of peak performance in the sport.

High performance manager, Aileen McGilvary commented “The supplementary investment to British Weightlifting  for use at Inverclyde is working well with good feedback from all the athletes and coaches and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to offer this support for their programme. There is a strong feeling of a wind of change for weightlifting in Scotland and a new generation of lifters are hungry to listen and perform. Residential training camps at the national centre helps them feel more professional and focussed for the next cycle.”

We caught up with John McEwan, Head Coach at Weightlifting Scotland and some of the athletes on the squad, to find out about their recent camp in December.
